Gong Girl (no offense meant)

September 26, 2014

I think that the sooner "Gone Girl" leaves the theaters, the better.

I also think that the sooner people stop making weird, obsessive movies about weird obsessions about wives who are dead or who might be dead, wives who are missing, wives who got kidnapped, wives who were killed by their husbands, wives who might have been killed by their husbands, wives who are dead and who stalk through the dreams of their husbands with homicidal intent, and all gratuitous variations on those themes, the better.

What's the message of those movies?  Isn't it that the husbands of those absent wives don't know how to get through an entire movie being good husbands to wives that are actually there?  How long is the average movie?  Even a couple of hours is too much for those supposedly smitten husbands to manage?

There are many, true stories of women who disappeared and/or were killed by their husbands.  Those stories deserve telling, and they ought not to be confused with stories about love.
