Defining reality at psychiatric facilities

February 17, 2015

I think that many, if not most, people who work in psychiatric facilities are used to defining the reality of what happens in those facilities.  Since 2010, I have yet to be in a psychiatric facility where harassment didn't happen and was not denied.

I have also yet to be in a psychiatric facility where there were no good people.  The system has abuse built into it, because it is too easy for practitioners to blame every issue on the patients. I think it's difficult for people who work in the system to avoid having their thinking and behavior at least occasionally distorted by the system's endemic abuses.

Most of the time, I get along with most of the staff and most of the patients and other clients at Quincy Mental Health Center.  When I don't, it's good that I can write online about the conflict or problem, so that my definitions of reality have weight somewhere.  So far, it's not enough weight, but it's better than nothing.
