I don't know if it was my Russian great-grandmother or her mother who witnessed the things that created the story. My father told it to me, years ago.
When my Jewish predecessors from Russia were leaving the country of their birth, they had to cross at least one river. One of the people who was there said that the ladies' skirts billowed around them, making them look like lily pads, floating across the river in the night.
