It's stigmatizing and isolating to be a mental patient or to have ever been one. The stigma and the resulting isolation and destruction of a positive social identity, and the continual stresses from those burdens, tend to destroy opportunities for everything from employment to school to forming relationships. I have never discussed the subject with other patients, but I think that masturbation is probably the primary sexual activity of most of the people who have been in mental hospitals a lot; that's if they haven't been too full of psychiatric medication for too long to have orgasms at all.
